This was a thrilling account that brought tears to my eyes. They don't make too many men like Captain Evans these days. Just amazing. I just read that only 16% of Gen Z is proud to live in America. That sickens me at heart.

Also Nancy, the graduating class at something like Oxford in something like 1939 declared, “We shall never fight for King or Country!” A year later, many of them, or their peers, were in the Battle of Britain, decisive for western civilization.

So despite what Gen Z says, it may just be empty words. One can hope so.

I found Evans’ name on the KIA panel at Annapolis when we toured the academy in about 1999. It is a riveting story. Unless I misremember it, he may have been the first non-white graduate of the Academy.

I would love to know of the likely angst in awarding him a combat vessel… but the Johnston was always in a support role, never intended to be in real action. What a hero! “We are about to engage in an action from which survival cannot be expected.” - Earnest E Evans 10/25/44

Excellent read with all the literary aplomb we could only get from the master of the word. Keep em coming, Curt.

Aplomb is not a word one often sees in print. I think it’s like a raisin, only fresher. Lol. Thanks for following!
